Best Non-Alcoholic Beers, Blind Tasted (2026)

The best non-alcoholic beer picks from our 2026 blind tasting: Athletic Run Wild, Guinness 0.0, Heineken 0.0. Verdicts from a crew pouring since 2008.

Non-alcoholic beer used to be a punchline. Warm O’Doul’s at a wedding, a sad token pour after your fourth Sprite, the beverage nobody actually wanted. That was fair to say in 2010. It is not fair in 2026.

We have been reviewing drinks and pouring at parties since 2008, and this year we ran a blind tasting of the top NA beers on the shelf. We poured every one from a can into a proper glass, at 38 degrees, alongside their full-strength counterparts, and asked our tasters to guess which was which. They were wrong more than half the time. That is the headline. Here is which bottles earned counter space and which ones we quietly poured down the drain.

What actually matters in a non-alcoholic beer

Three things separate a keeper from a dumper.

First, head retention and mouthfeel. Alcohol carries body. Strip the alcohol, and most beers collapse into watery seltzer with a hint of malt. The best NA brewers replace that body with residual sugar, extra protein, or nitrogen carbonation. When the head dies in ten seconds, so does the illusion.

Second, hop character without harshness. Removing alcohol also strips volatile hop aromas. Athletic Brewing, Brooklyn, and Sierra Nevada dry-hop their NA beers hard and late to bring back the citrus, pine, and stone-fruit notes that make an IPA taste like an IPA.

Third, calorie honesty. Most NA beers are 50 to 90 calories. That is a real selling point. A “session IPA” at 5% ABV runs 180 calories. The math is why NA beer is the fastest-growing beverage category in the US, up around 32% year over year in 2025.

The blind tasting: how we ran it

We poured 12 beers across four styles (IPA, lager, stout, wheat) into unmarked glasses, chilled to 38 degrees, and served each one next to a full-strength benchmark of the same style. Six of us scored aroma, mouthfeel, and finish on a 1-to-10 scale. No one saw the cans until the end.

Bar note: NA beer is more temperature-sensitive than regular beer. Warm above 45 degrees and the trick falls apart fast. Keep the can in ice water for ten minutes before pouring, always into a real glass.

Our best overall: Athletic Brewing Run Wild IPA

The Athletic Brewing Run Wild IPA is the NA beer we keep in the fridge every week. Five Northwest hops, 65 calories, under 0.5% ABV, and it holds a real head for a real amount of time. About $19 for a 12-pack.

Run Wild pours a bright copper with a two-finger head that lasts. The nose is orange peel and pine. The palate is medium-bodied with just enough bitterness to remind you it is an IPA. One of our tasters, a lifelong Lagunitas drinker, picked Run Wild as his favorite pour of the night. He was told what it was after he handed the empty glass back and asked for another.

Athletic has been on a tear since founder Bill Shufelt walked away from a hedge-fund job in 2017 to make beer people could drink and still function. They started as a curiosity. In 2026 they are the largest independent NA brewer in the country, and Run Wild is why.

Best light and sessionable: Athletic Upside Dawn

The Athletic Upside Dawn Golden Ale is our pick for anyone easing into NA from the domestic-lager side of the fridge. 50 calories, gluten-reduced, and clean enough to drink four in a row on a hot afternoon. About $19 for a 12-pack.

Upside Dawn is understated on purpose. Vienna malt, mild English and American hops, and a finish that gets out of the way. It won silver at the 2020 Best of Craft Beer Awards judged against alcoholic beers, which tells you where the category is. This is the one we hand to the person who says “I only drink Bud Light.”

Best stout: Guinness 0.0

The Guinness brewers spent four years reverse-engineering their own beer without the alcohol. It shows. Guinness 0.0 uses the same roasted barley, hops, and yeast as the classic pour, then filters out the alcohol using a cold-filtration process that preserves the body. Nitrogen carbonation does the rest. The head is thick, the color is dark ruby, and the finish is coffee and cocoa. It is the only NA stout we would order in a pub without hesitation.

Guinness 0.0 is not widely stocked on Amazon (a quirk of shipping regulations on stouts). Grocery store beer aisles and Total Wine carry it reliably. If your store does not, ask them. Enough people asking gets it on the shelf.

Best mainstream lager: Heineken 0.0

Heineken 0.0 is the NA beer you can find literally anywhere, and it will not embarrass you. True 0.0% ABV, 69 calories, and tastes recognizably like Heineken. About $17 for a 12-pack.

Heineken was one of the first big brands in this category and their 0.0 is now the default NA lager on airplanes, at conferences, and behind hotel bars. It is not the most interesting beer we tasted. It is the most useful one to know exists. If you are traveling, ordering a Heineken 0.0 is the fastest way to have a real-tasting cold beer in your hand without a conversation.

The variety pack: how to start

The Athletic Brewing Variety Pack gives you six Run Wild IPAs and six Upside Dawns in one box. About $19, and it is what we hand to anyone curious about the category.

Buying a full 12-pack of any single NA beer before you know if you like it is a small gamble. Buy the variety pack. Decide which one you reach for on a Thursday night. Then commit to a case of that.

What we did not love

O’Doul’s. Still the punchline. Watery, sweet, no head. Skip it.

Coors Edge. Better than O’Doul’s, still boring. If you want a domestic-lager profile, Heineken 0.0 does it better for the same money.

Some seltzer-adjacent “hop waters.” These are their own category (we have a whole guide coming). If you are looking for a beer, hop water is not a beer. Do not let a bartender substitute one for the other and charge you $8.

How to drink NA beer like it is beer

Three rules from the tasting.

Pour it into a real glass, always. NA beer needs the ritual to feel like beer. A can in your hand at 42 degrees is a Diet Coke. A glass with a proper head on a table with a coaster is a beer.

Serve it colder than regular beer. Cold masks the missing body. 36 to 40 degrees is the target. Warm above 45 and the illusion collapses.

Pair it with real food. Run Wild with pizza. Upside Dawn with a burger. Guinness 0.0 with a steak. NA beer is a food beverage first and a solo sipper second. Treat it that way and you will forget what is missing.

A note on moderation

NA beer is a tool. For anyone who wants a lower-alcohol lifestyle, a Dry January, a Tuesday off, or a full step away from drinking, this is the best the category has ever been. It is not a magic bullet. It is a real beer-shaped choice that used to not exist. If you are in recovery, check with your program and your doctor. The trace alcohol in most NA beer (0.4 to 0.5%) can be a trigger for some, a non-issue for others. Every good decision here is a personal one, made in advance, not at the fridge.

Drink well, drink less, drink whatever you want. The good news is that “less” tastes better than it ever has.
